Acid Pre-Dosing & pH Control

With more crops moving into peat free growing material and using substrates like coir or coco peat, it becomes increasingly important to control and monitor the pH level in your water, ensuring uptake from nutrients in the media or fertilisers. Not controlling pH to the right levels puts you in danger of locking out nutrients that provide growth and health to plants

Why pH Control Matters

Maintaining the correct pH in irrigation water directly influences nutrient uptake, root health, and overall system performance. When pH drifts too high, key nutrients such as iron, manganese, and phosphorus can become unavailable, leading to deficiencies and reduced growth. Conversely, excessively low pH can cause corrosion, emitter blockages, and stress to sensitive root systems.

Benefits of Proper pH Management

  • Improved nutrient availability – Ensures fertilizers remain soluble and accessible to plants.

  • Reduced system blockages – Minimizes scale formation and precipitation in pipes, drippers, and filters.

  • Healthier root zones – Protects roots from pH‑induced stress and supports consistent growth.

  • More efficient fertilizer use – Prevents nutrient waste and enhances overall irrigation efficiency.

Automated pH control

Our acid pre dosing system is a fully automated system that stabilises water pH before it enters your irrigation storage tank. Using a pH sensor, controller, and variable speed dosing pump, the system injects acid during tank filling, allowing the acid to react with oxygen and deliver a consistent, stable pH. This improves nutrient uptake, protects irrigation equipment, and ensures reliable water quality for every irrigation cycle.

Acid Pre Dosing Systems

Tank Filling Line

Positioned between the filling pump and the storage tank, our inline pH dosing system activates as soon as flow is detected. Acid is injected directly into the filling line, utilising the existing pump for delivery. The integrated pH sensor feeds live data to the controller, which adjusts the dosing rate continuously to hold the water at a precise, pre‑set pH level before storage.

Tank Curculation

This circulation system continuously treats the water inside the tank. A separate pump pulls water from the base of the tank, sends it through the dosing unit, and returns it back into the tank for thorough mixing. With live readings from the pH sensor, the smart controller regulates dosing automatically, keeping the whole tank at a consistent, accurate pH level and improving water quality before irrigation.

How Pre‑Dosing Prevents Over‑Correction and Acid Wastage

At IrriSmart, our fertigation machines already manage irrigation, nutrient delivery, EC and pH. So why control pH before the water enters the fertigation system?

Why Pre‑Dosing pH Works Better

When acid is injected into the filling tank, it reacts with dissolved oxygen and neutralises alkalinity before the water reaches the irrigation lines. This reaction is far more complete and efficient, meaning less acid is required to achieve the same pH correction.

Inside a tank, the water naturally settles and equalises. This stable environment allows the controller to make slow, accurate adjustments rather than chasing fluctuating readings in a fast‑moving irrigation line.

What Pre‑Dosing Prevents

  • Over‑correction

  • Oscillation

  • “Hunting” behaviour All of these waste acid and create unstable pH levels.

Why the Sensor Works Better in a Stable Environment

With the sensor positioned in the tank or filling line, the controller can:

  • Read pH more accurately

  • Adjust pump speed smoothly

  • Avoid dosing spikes

This precision ensures only the exact amount of acid needed is injected.

The Problem With Dosing Directly Into the Irrigation Line

When acid is dosed only through the fertigation machine:

  • Water flow changes constantly

  • pH reacts slowly

  • Sensors receive delayed readings

  • High alkalinity often leads to over‑dosing

The fertigation machine is forced to correct the entire pH shift instantly, which is inefficient and increases acid consumption.

The Advantage of Pre‑Dosing

By correcting pH during the filling cycle, the fertigation machine only needs to make small, final adjustments. This results in:

  • Lower acid usage

  • More stable pH

  • Better nutrient availability

  • Improved system protection

Benafits

  • Simple operation: thanks to a clearly arranged display.

  • More for your money: two measuring and control channels now in the basic configuration.

  • Versatile use: all common measured variables can be set per channel and subsequently altered.

  • Control from anywhere: LAN-capable and convenient remote access via integrated web server.

  • Maximum flexibility: individually adjustable to different operating statuses, e.g. day-night mode.

  • Excellent process reliability: avoidance of incorrect metering through time-based monitoring of control variables.

Water Treatment

What else can we control?

Same approach, different treatment, different results.

Using the same controller and the same pump we can also measure and control:
• Hydrogen Peroxide
• Chlorine
• Chlorine dioxide
• Connectivity
• Ozone
• Dissolved oxygen
